Philippine Volcanoes national team will lean on homegrown talent

Homegrown talent will make up most of the members of the Philippine Volcanoes National Men’s Sevens Rugby Team, that’s being selected for the upcoming 2019 World Series Qualifiers in Hong Kong next month.

The players, who have been trimmed down to 18, will soon be cut to a final 12, according to Jake Letts, the General Manager for Philippine Rugby Football Union,

“We have many Fil-Heritage players who are in top level competitions. When we play in Hong Kong next week. The team will be comprised of home-grown players,” said Letts.

This time, the campaign of the Volcanoes will also have the support of global real estate consultancy firm, Santos Knight Frank, and through their chairman and CEO Rick Santos, who joined Letts during the announcement.

The qualifiers in Hong Kong is slated from April 5 to 7 at the Hong Kong National Stadium.

Only two Asian nations qualified in 2019, and the Philippines made it with 2018 Asian Games Gold Medalists Hong Kong.

The Volcanoes are preparing to join the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

In doing so, the Volcanoes secured their place in the WSQ after they settled for a bronze medal in Asia for the 2018 Asia Sevens Series.

Olympic qualifying games are also in store for the Volcanoes, according to Letts.”‹
