MMDA trains sight on metro jaywalkers

Individuals caught jaywalking across busy streets in Metro Manila would soon find themselves on the alarm list of the National Bureau of Investigation.

Metro Manila Development Authority general manager Jose Arturo Garcia Jr. said names of violators (of Anti-Jaywalking Ordinance) with unsettled citation tickets or who failed to pay penalties nor render corresponding community service will be forwarded to the NBI for inclusion on its alarm list.

“If we apprehend a jaywalker and he disregards the ticket, we can file charges for violating a local ordinance and forward his name to NBI,” said Garcia. Joel E. Zurbano

This developed shortly after members of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) agreed to deputize the MMDA to enforce local anti-jaywalking ordinances of the 17 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila.

“We are delighted that all LGUs in Metro Manila have anti-jaywalking ordinances. We have asked them (LGUs) to deputize our men to give more teeth to the local ordinances,” said Garcia after the MMC meeting held at MMDA headquarters Thursday.
