Calbayog City, Samar—The city council here has placed the entire Calbayog under state of calamity due to the massive flooding spawned by heavy rains dumped by Tropical Depression ‘‘Usman’’ killing at least three people and displacing thousands of families.
At least 5,000 families have been affected by massive flooding in this city, prompting the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to recommend the state of calamity declaration.
The city council approved the recommendation in a special session on Monday.
Rolando Saplad, assistant city DRRM officer, said three persons have been confirmed dead while five are still missing as of Wednesday.
The resolution likewise pointed out more than P10.8 million worth of infrastructure were destroyed while agriculture suffered P8-million losses.
At least 87 houses in Cag-anahaw, a remote village in the city, were washed away.
Saplad said Oquendo district is among the three districts in Calbayog City heavily affected by the flash floods.
The city government and non-government organizations have been distributing relief goods to affected families.
The CDRRM office said that all roads including those areas previously reported with landslide are now passable.
