The University of the Philippines’ Board of Regents on Monday has withdrawn its recommendation to reappoint Regent Frederick “Spocky” Farolan following his Facebook post on the UAAP Men’s Basketball finals.

“Committed to a higher standard of accountability for its members, the Board hereby withdraws its recommendation for the reappointment of Regent Farolan to the Board of Regents,” the UP Board of Regents said in a statement on Monday.

“We enjoin Regent Farolan from making any such further statements which can compromise the reputation and the goodwill of the University.”

In other developments:

• Malacañang on Monday said it would be up to the University of the Philippines to act on the calls for Farolan to step down.

“We leave it to UP because it happened there. We always respect the independence of any entity in this country,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters.

• At least three senators who are UP alumni have called for Farolan’s resignation over his Facebook post.

Senator Francis Pangilinan, who served as UP Regent twice, said Farolan’s statements were unacceptable and a disgrace to the state university.

Senator Nancy Binay said, “Out of delicadeza and out of love for UP, it is best for Regent Spocky Farolan to tender his resignation.”

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III echoed the sentiments of his fellow senators.

In a Facebook post, Farolan said:  “Sayang hindi kumpleto ang players ng Ateneo sa Wednesday. Tatlo injured. Pili na kayo kung sinu-sino mga yon.”

This has triggered violence between the fraternities of the two universities in the comment section.

“Suggestion ko nga para sign of solidarity, a composite strike team of all UP frats. Tatlong players lang. Kaya na ‘yon. mwehehehe,” he said.

Farolan later deleted the post.

He claimed he could have been misinterpreted, and he did not intend to sow violence.

Some lawmakers, including Senator Francis Pangilinan, called for Farolan’s resignation, noting that Farolan’s statements were a “disgrace” to the University. With PNA
