Study, mayor urges Navotas inmates

Mayor John Rey Tiangco has encouraged inmates at Navotas City Jail to continue their education and aspire for greater things in life.

In his speech during the graduation of 14 inmates from the Alternative Learning System, Tiangco said getting their diplomas is the first step towards reaching success.

“Your stay here is only temporary. You must prepare for the day that you will regain your freedom,” he said.

“Making use of your time here for meaningful purposes, especially for earning your diploma, will help you create a better life for you and your loved ones,” he added.

Tiangco said that once they are released, inmates could pursue tertiary education for free at the Navotas Polytechnic College.

They may also avail of the free technical-vocational courses offered at the city’s two training centers accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

He further said that the city government is in the process of building two more training centers that will offer courses on carpentry, animation, visual graphics, among others.

Navotas is also building an extension of the city jail in cooperation with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to ease congestion.
