29 Navoteños finish ‘Bidahan’ community-based rehab course

Twenty-nine Navoteños with prior substance use disorders (SUD) have been given a new lease in life after graduating from Bidahan, the community-based treatment and rehabilitation program of the Navotas City Government.

The 17th batch of Bidahan participants underwent a three-day retreat where they learned about the effects of drugs in their body and ways to avoid getting hooked on illegal substances.

They were further taught proper grooming, healthy lifestyle, as well as how to value themselves and their loved ones.

The 29 residents will then engage in twice-a-week counseling sessions for six months, and undertake random drug testing to ensure their compliance to the program.

“Bidahan is just the start. The process of healing and recovery takes time but we are hopeful that with everyone’s constant support and vigilance, our SUD patients will soon be healed completely,” Mayor John Rey Tiangco said.

During the graduation ceremony, actor CJ Ramos, who was released in August on bail, shared his experience and struggles with drug abuse.

Ramos was invited by NBBS Kaunlaran Barangay Captain Toto Natividad, director of the popular TV series “Ang Probinsyano,” to speak at the program.

“The campaign against illegal drugs is not easy. While we have made some progress, the fight is far from over.  Each and every Navoteño must stand together for us to win this battle,” Tiangco said.

Navotas’ anti-drug campaign also includes Philippine National Police-Navotas Nurture and Educate Surrenderees Towards Transformation (NEST), and faith-based interventions such as Sipag and Gabay projects.

In September, 21 women completed the Bidahan, while 10 graduated from Navotas NEST.

The Bidahan program started in October 2016 and has since had 17 batches with a total of 432 participants, with 73 completing the 6-month program.

For those willing to undergo Bidahan, they may visit the Navotas Anti-Drug Abuse Council Office at the first floor of Navotas City Hall or they may call 283-7250.
