Volunteerism is the mirror of compassion, selflessness, patience and love working altogether to define humanity. Believing in the spirit of volunteerism, Write On Track (WOT) celebrated its beautiful five years in the marketing industry by producing Juan Earth, as a way of giving back to the planet. Just last September 29, 2018 in the busy streets of BGC in Taguig, WOT held a remarkable day filled with hearts and care for the environment preservation and animal protection.
“Over a thousand individuals participated in the event, some shared their performing arts talents, some shared their time, some donated, some volunteered, some provided resources, and some just held our hand,” Write On Track Chief Operating Officer Koko Tamura said. “It was truly a heart-melting moment for us when we saw all are participating and contributing to our CSR [corporate social responsibility] efforts.”
Pioneering the restoration of the forests in the Philippines, Haribon Foundation encouraged everyone to join hands in their mission through “Adopt-a-Seedling” program. With this project, visitors were able to adopt a seedling of Philippine native tree breeds like Dao, Kamagong, Lauan, Makaasim, and Narra. The proceeds from the adoption will be used for Haribon’s Forest for Life Movement and other forest restoration activities. Completing their campaign, Ken Peñaflor of Haribon Foundation demonstrated the proper way of planting a tree.
Traveling all the way from La Union to Juan Earth, Science of Identity Foundation (SIFCare) – Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA) educated the participants on the vital role of the pawikans or sea turtles. Toby Tamayo of SIFCare-CURMA had a talk regarding the status of the sea turtles in the Philippines. Moreover, the CURMA project engaged with the visitors through its “Adopt-a-Pawikan Nest” program wherein volunteers were able to adopt a turtle nest and get to release its baby turtles back to the sea; and back-to-back with its Ecobricks Cavite partner wherein Mike Resureccion taught everyone how to make an ecobrick.
Another partner of Juan Earth is a warrior for the giant clams which lies deep down our oceans. UP Marine Science Institute-Bolinao Marine Laboratory researcher, Rubie Esmolo, taught the visitors the history of giant clams conservation and the essential roles of these species in the oceans. Part of their advocacy during the event was the “Adopt-a-Baby Giant Clam” wherein volunteers were able to adopt clams which will be cared at the Silaqui Ocean Nursery—where the largest population of giant clams in the Philippines can be found.
The last main partner non-government organization (NGO) in Juan Earth was Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) Welfare Philippines – a dedicated group of animal lovers determined to help the plight of animals in the country. The group let everyone had a fun meeting with their clinic dogs Koko and Paning, LPB Zen, and some of their volunteer’s adoptable cats. Also, CARA thanked Write On Track, the volunteers for handling the adoptables, and everyone who generously donated and supported their ‘Adopt Not Shop’ advocacy. “We were able to raise 11k + php that will go to the food and staff care for the adoptables,” stated on CARA’s Facebook page.
Other non-government organizations who shared their environmental campaigns were Earth Island Institute, FEED, Inc., and Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines. Write On Track also teamed up with school organizations such as UP Club for Environment and Tourism, Agila, EARTH-UST, UP ONE EARTH, and UPLB Veterinary Medical Students.
Adding more excitement to Juan Earth, grand raffle prizes were given away during the event. An audience member won a staycation at Club Punta Fuego in Batangas from Heart of Phoenix (HOP) Travel, Inc; another rode his bicycle courtesy of GT Bicycles; and the grand winner scored a tour and hotel accommodation in Chengdu, China with a Panda encounter from China Travel Service. At the end, OPM band Silent Sanctuary jammed with the eco-warriors who pledged towards a greener community.
