Mayor John Rey Tiangco has called on Navoteños to segregate their wastes at home and help protect the ocean.
During the Waste Assessment and Brand Audit of the Mother Earth Foundation at Brgy. Tanza II, Tiangco reminded participants that fishing is Navoteños’ main source of living.
“Most of us depend on the sea for our livelihood. Sadly, our oceans are now polluted with different sorts of trash, especially plastic, and this causes gradual death of marine life,” he said.
“Waste sorting at home goes a long way in our efforts to keep our city clean and prevent further pollution of our oceans,” Tiangco added.
Earlier, the city government entered into a memorandum of with Mother Earth Foundation for the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program.
Under the MOA, Mother Earth will provide the 18 barangays of Navotas an integrated information, education and communication (IEC) campaign regarding eco-waste management. The IEC will put focus on waste segregation from the source and will be delivered to Navoteños through a door-to-door approach.
The foundation will also take charge of baseline data gathering such as ocular visits, solid waste management perception and practices, and green profiling and inventory in the barangay level.
Furthermore, both parties will collaboratively work to develop and implement a stringent ESWMP through revision and provision of local laws and policy support, sustainable and practical initiatives, and construction of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in all barangays.
Meanwhile, Avot John, the city government’s official mascot, has started visiting public elementary schools to teach proper waste segregation to Grade 3 pupils.
