Angat Dam will not spill over – Pagasa

WITH expected thunderstorm rains over Metro Manila, and the rest of Luzon, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration on Thursday gave the public the assurance that Bulacan’s Angat Dam will not spill over, affect Ipo and Bustos dams in Luzon, and even flood nearby communities.

In an interview, weather forecaster Samuel Duran said only the Visayas and Mindanao will experience moderate rainfall due to low pressure area inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility or 630 kilometers east of Guian, Eastern Samar.

The amount of isolated or thunderstorm rains would not be that enough to increase the water elevation of the three dams in Bulacan.

Edgar dela Cruz, Pagasa hydrologist, said Angat Dam’s raw water resources would pass through Ipo and Bustos dams to end up in La Mesa Dam for water treatment and distribution to customers of the two water concessionaires of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System—the Manila Water Co. Inc. and Maynilad Water Services Inc.

“With the kind of rainfall condition in the area, it is unlikely Angat Dam will spill over,” he told the Manila Standard.

“Dam operators would know if their water would overflow. They also do not want their dam facilities to be destroyed if there is too much water,” he said.
