Government agents arrested a taxi driver who stole a bag with P60,000 worth of cash and valuables owned by a returning female overseas Filipino worker whom he picked up at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Monday.
Members of the Manila International Airport Authority—Intelligence and Investigation Division also recovered the valuable items stolen by suspect Rodel Ormillo from his passenger Catalina Prado, a native of Surigao del Sur.
Investigation conducted by MIAA-IID police inspector Erick Mejia showed that Prado, who works as the laser technician in Oman, took a regular white taxi Queensmen with registration plate 1130-ABQ driven by Ormillo after her arrival at the Naia terminal 1 on the night of July 16.
While exiting the Naia compound, Ormillo told Prado that his company charges a P1,700 flat rate for a passenger going to the area of Muntinlupa City. This prompted Prado to ask the driver to transfer her to another taxi that charges a metered rate. Joel E. Zurbano
“She (Prado) was allowed to disembark and driver Ormillo unloaded her baggage. As she was counting her bags, she noticed that her black backpack was not unloaded prompting her to approach the driver who immediately sped off,” said Mejia.
Prado went back to NAIA Terminal 1 and filed a complaint at the Airport Police Department and IID office where she was asked to furnish them the copy of the taxi dispatch slip, a piece of paper given to passengers to identify the name of the taxi, its plate number, and operator.
