Filipino inventor and entrepreneur Edgardo ‘Gary’ Vazquez has secured the ‘Misty Kool’ trademark for his mist-dispensing apparatus from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
“Finally, it is certified,” says Vazquez, the 65-year-old inventor of the outdoor air-conditioning system.
Misty Kool is a misting system that sprays ultra-fine microns of water to cool off any area. It conserves energy while offering an air-cooling effect and repels flying insects, dust, smoke and pollen.
The Bureau of Legal Affairs of IPOPHL promulgated a decision on May 30, 2018 that the ‘Misty Kool’ trademark owned and used by Vazquez to refer to his Misty Kool Spray Mist Dispensing Apparatus or movable spray mist fan is a registrable trademark.
The decision was issued to resolve the case IPC No. 14-2017-00274 entitled ‘Daneiros Trading vs. Edgardo Vazquez.’ Vazquez was represented by Atty. Oscar Manahan, an IP rights lawyer.
The decision underscores that the essence of trademark registration is to give protection to the owner of a trademark. It also confirms the superior quality of the product that Vazquez sells as a fruit of his industry and skill. Likewise, it is an assurance that the consumers are procuring a genuine article or product, says Vazquez.
The Misty Kool machine consists of a misting fan, high-pressure pumps, fine nozzles, switches, oil indicator, programmable timer, automatic shut-off mechanism, hose, 41-liter water tank and heavy-duty wheels with locking mechanism.
He offers the technology in two forms—a line machine and electric fan-type unit that can produce Baguio-like breeze instantly.
Misty Kool produces mist, which evaporates into the air, and this is sometimes called “flash evaporation” because it happens “quickly as a flash” and gives a stronger cooling effect. Vazquez says the air is cooled evenly and feels more like a fog.
“In engineering, they call it the flash point. When you subject the water at a very high pressure, then extrude it through a very fine nozzle, it automatically becomes mist and floats in the air,” says Vazquez, who is also known as the inventor of the Vazbuilt modular housing technology in the Philippines.
Vazquez shares the results of a comparative analysis of Misty Kool line and fan systems versus cooler/humidifier and air-conditioner. The study found that Misty Kool is more environment-friendly, more user-friendly, more economical, more portable and mobile and covers a larger area, compared to the two machines. It also repels insects and captures smoke, dust and pollen particles.
A misting system reduces humidity and cools the air with mist via a high-pressure pump and nozzle spray. Vazquez says unlike a cooler/humidifier that requires constant cleaning, Misty Kool has a water filter that ensures that the mist is clean all the time, and the fan carries the mist across the areas to lower ambient temperature.
“I am sure this would be a big help in selecting the best outdoor cooling system,” says Vazquez.
The Misty Kool fan system can cover 85 square meters, more than the 50-sqm reach of a cooler/humidifier or the 10-sqm coverage of air-conditioner. It has an air-flow delivery of up to 50 meters, compared to cooler/humidifier’s 18 meters and air-conditioner’s five meters.
Vazquez says his invention also has 90-degree oscillating fan, compared to the directional coverage of a cooler/humidifier.
Vazquez says Misty Kool is applicable to any area or industry. It is now being used at patios and gardens, al fresco dining areas, beach resorts, gymnasiums, arenas, public areas, and greenhouses.
Vazquez has also developed a bigger machine to suck heat from the air and repel pollution in industrial sites surrounded by communities.
The bigger machine called Turbo Kool is a remote-controlled, elevated dust suppression control system that can blow cool fine mist hundreds of meters into the air that can capture dust and other particulates and bring them down to the ground. It can also lower temperature by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, says Vazquez, who based the design on Misty Kool.
He says that unlike the Misty Kool line system and electric fan-type machines, the Turbo Kool dust suppression control system is ideal for industrial areas, power plants, ports, materials handling facilities, construction sites, orchards and large gardens.
