For now, the Philippine Sports Commission won’t be releasing funding for the national contingent headed to the Asian Games in Indonesia.
A budget allocation of P72 million is reserved for the Asiad, but an unliquidated P10.3 million funds released for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games needs to be accounted for first.
PSC officials, led by officer in charge Arnold Agustin, explained this following a meeting with Asian Games chef de mission Richard Gomez and his deputy Robert Bachmann following a meeting yesterday.
“The PSC is ready to support with the financial assistance, but that’s pending liquidation,” said Commissioner Ramon Fernandez.
Around 285 athletes are expected to be sent to the Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia slated from Aug. 18 to Sept.2.
Gomez will discuss their funding woes with Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas in their coming meeting.
So far, the Philippine delegation will be composed of athletes in athletics, swimming, men’s basketball, softball, cycling, taekwondo and karatedo.
Efforts to include a women’s volleyball team and a contingent in weightlifting is being pushed.
