Jet ski rider drowns amid typhoon

ONE person died following the heavy rain brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon due to tropical storm “Domeng,” the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday.

Authorities said the casualty, Algemon Dalisam Nuñez, 27, drowned after falling from his jet ski due to the strong current.

Council spokesman Edgar Posadas said the victim, who worked for a resort in El Nido, Palawan, went missing on June 6 and his body was retrieved on June 8.

Domeng intensified into a typhoon While leaving the Philippine area of responsibility at 9:30 am on Sunday, and the weather bureau said it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and trigger rain in Luzon this week.

Meanwhile, in Mindoro, six fishermen were rescued at sea on Saturday night after their boat collided with a bulk carrier. 

In Cavite, a man crossing a river with his nine-year-old child was swept away by the strong current and has been declared missing. His child was pulled to safety by bystanders.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation in Pampanga, where some 15 houses were damaged.

On June 5, Domeng became a tropical depression from a low pressure area and turned into a typhoon on Sunday morning.

Heavy rain had affected many areas of the country since Saturday, causing damage to a bridge, brownouts, flooding and some trip cancellations.

Low-lying areas in Metro Manila were flooded overnight, inconveniencing motorists and residents.

At 2 pm on Sunday, the weather bureau raised the orange warning level in Cavite and warned that floods might threaten the area.

The Yellow warning level was raised in Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Batangas and Laguna, where flooding may occur in the low-lying areas.
