Mac Cuan has had a successful basketball career as any. His journey in the sport has found him become a varsity player with the De La Salle University, a professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association and a coach with Alab Pilipinas in the Asean Basketball League and now with Mandaluyong El Tigre in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Throughout his journey the one constant is the love for the game of basketball.
“Playing the game is much different from coaching. When you play you focus on yourself. In coaching you get joy when you see other players get better. You are more a guide to 15 players in a team. But ang constant is the passion, the love for the game,” said coach Cuan.
The El Tigre mentor says his coaching philosophy is to pay full attention on the work at hand. He doesn’t like to look too far ahead. He’d rather concentrate on what he can do, day to day.
“I don’t focus on long term goals. I always look at what can be done immediately. You take care of today then the future takes care of itself. Take care of today then the following day you get better. Then the following day you again get better. If you do that every day then the results will come,” said coach Cuan.
With a powerhouse lineup there are high expectations for the Mandaluyong El Tigre team. There may be pressure to succeed and win. Coach Cuan choses to set those concerns aside and just think of ways to improve his team every single day.
“Winning a championship that’s outside and too far ahead. We have our own expectations on this team. We take it day by day. We just focus working the hardest to become better every day,” said coach Cuan.
