A LOW-PRESSURE area outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility may develop into a tropical depression and enter the country this Holy Week, the weather bureau said Sunday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the low-pressure area will be named “Caloy” if it does enter the country.

The weather disturbance was 1,740 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Norte. It could enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday night or Tuesday morning and then leave quickly.

Weathermen said it could intensify into a typhoon though it was not expected to make landfall or directly affect any parts of the country.

• The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Sunday vowed to implement security measures to safeguard vulnerable communities despite no specific threats from rebels this Holy Week.

Brig. Gen. Bienvenido Datuin, spokesman and head of the AFP’s Civil Relations Service, said the military will not put its guard down this Lenten season.

“There is no specific threat for the Holy week, but the AFP will not put its guard down,” Datuin said.

“We will continue to conduct appropriate measures where needed to safeguard vulnerable communities.”
