Mayon Volcano shows fresh activity

Some three weeks after authorities lowered Mayon Volcano’s alert level, renewed activity was recorded on Thursday.

Authorities said there was a “lava collapse” in the volcano, which triggered ash, rocks and gases to flow out.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Director Renato Solidum, however, said that ‘there was no eruption’ but added that the alert remained at 3, or two rungs lower of the five-step warning system.

Level 4, the second highest alert, was put into place in January, which required the evacuation of residents near the area.

The Phivolcs said it would observe the volcano’s activity for “several days” and if it shows no more swelling or lava release, it might lower the alert level to 2.
