SAN Beda University dominated the recent 93rd NCAA Tennis and Soft Tennis tournaments by ruling four divisions at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
San Beda University edged Lyceum, 2-1, in an exciting championship battle to clinch the NCAA junior division; then turned back Arellano University, 2-1, to capture the NCAA women’s tennis crown; nipped College of St. Benilde in a dramatic 2-1 victory for the NCAA women’s soft tennis jewel; and concluded its campaign by winning the men soft tennis demonstration event for its fourth NCAA trophy.
Graduating senior high school netter Dawson Ormoc edged Renz Pacheco of Lyceum, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, for the championship point in the junior division.
But it was the inspired game of SBU team captain Eduardo Bagaforo and Aidyl Ignacio that equalized the contest following a 6-4, 6-4 doubles’ victory over Stefano Gurria and Elvin Geluz.
Pirate Jarell Edangga had earlier given LPU the first point with a 6-2, 6-2 rout over Red Directo.
Bagaforo was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy.
Melanie Faye Dizon bagged the women’s tennis MVP, Ela Javier and Siobe Penados were declared co-MVPs for their outstanding performances in the women’s soft tennis, and team captain Arjay Canoza won MVP honors in the men’s soft tennis division.
SBU mentor Jovy Mamawal, who captured the Coach of the Year award, celebrated his 36th year in the NCAA with his 22nd tennis and soft tennis career titles.
Only the Seniors’ tennis trophy slipped away after the College St. Benilde edged the Red Netters, 2-1 .
