The Senate Committee on Public Services is looking into the plan of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to ban the hatchbacks of the Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS).

The LTFRB had cited the safety of passengers as reason for the plan.

But Senate Committee Chairperson Grace Poe said the hatchbacks or the compact cars had been used by TNVS for the past two years and there had been no incidents involving these units.

The lawmaker said the Board must act humanely and consider the livelihood that the drivers of hatchbacks will lose if the agency will impose the ban.

The panel is also looking into guidelines that limit the TNVS operations in Metro Manila.

Senators are also checking the impact of the newly-enacted Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law into the fare rates of the TNVS.

The law signed last year increased the excise tax on petroleum products.
