Globe Telecom Inc. said it teamed up with three more big merchants to accept cashless payments via QR codes.
Globe president and chief executive Ernest Cu said it signed separate agreements with Kentucky Fried Chicken, National Book Store and Andoks Corp. to accept cashless payment on all its stores nationwide.
Cu added Globe was also looking at transport operators to accept QR codes payment.
“We’ve been in talks with this e-transport companies, e-jeepney companies, but nothing’s concrete yet. As more merchants come, more users will come. I think GCash is doing the right thing—putting a priority at the most relevant merchants,” he added.
There are over six million GCash app downloads, while active users stood at over one million.
GCash in August this year introduced the scan to pay feature in the GCash App that allowed customers to pay by simply scanning QR (quick response) codes of merchants.
To date, QR payments across different merchants accross the country have been deployed successfully, transforming the local retail scene into a cashless landscape.
GCash, operated by Mynt which is owned by Globe, Ant Financial and Ayala Corp., has been aggressively campaigning for cashless payment system using the GCash App scan to pay feature.
More than 4,000 GCash QRs are now being accepted in various merchants nationwide, including the biggest players in the retail industry such as Ayala Malls, Robinsons Department Store, SM Malls, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls Cinema, Puregold, Ministop, and NCCC Malls.
Globe earlier posted a net income of P15.1 billion last year, down 5 percent from P15.9 billion in 2016 as increased investments in its data network pushed non- operating expenses and depreciation charges higher for the period.
