The Philippine election system is vulnerable to cyber attacks as the government is not prepared to fight hackers, according to a cybersecurity expert.

Marc Goodman, author of the best-selling book Future Crimes and founder and Future Crimes Institute and chairman of Policy, Law and Ethics at Silicon Valley’s Singularity University, said hacking was going to get more sophisticated because of the exponential growth of technology.

Goodman said governments like the Philippines were not well prepared to cope with such growth in cybercrime.

“Cybercrime has been growing exponentially but our governments, policy makers are on plateau,” Goodman said during the PilipinasCon 2018, a forum on cybersecurity and the Internet of Things, at the Enderun Colleges on McKinley Hill in Taguig City.

He noted the vulnerabilities of the election system especially in the age of automation where it is easier to cheat with just a press of the button in the voting machines.  He said hacking the elections were reported not only in developing countries like the Philippines but even in developed countries such as the United States.
