Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Mariano Del Castillo expressed his own dismay over the delay in the Supreme Court's processing of survivorship benefits for the surviving spouses of deceased justices and judges.
"It was quite an unusual amount of time for the committee to study the matter," he stated.
Del Castillo made the remarks as he testified in the House Committee on Justice' impeachment hearing against SC Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
"Laging sinasabi ni CJ na may special committee na binuo para pag aralan ang conflicting laws sa survivorship benefits," he recalled.
Del Castillo said one of the 29 applicants, Mrs. Dolores Colayco, already died without receiving these benefits due her.
Colayco was the wife of Court of Appeals Justice Jose Colayco.
She applied for the survivorship in August 2016.
She died in October 3, 2017 at the age of 94 without getting her benefits.
