THERE is no longer enough time to pursue the impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, who is about to retire in six months, the chairman of the House committee on justice said Sunday.

“As she approaches her retirement in July, impeaching Ombudsman Morales is no longer practical and realistic,” said Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali.

He said Congress would be too busy with the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and the effort to usher in a federal system of government.

“Let’s just wait for her retirement, especially now that we are very busy conducting hearings on the impeachment complaint against the Chief Justice and of course, the push for federalism,” he said.

On Dec. 13, an impeachment complaint was filed against Morales, but not a single member of the House of Representatives endorsed the petition.

The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, represented by its lawyer, Manuelito Luna, filed the  impeachment complaint against the Ombudsman for alleged betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and culpable violation of the Constitution.
