Eco group bewails New Year trash

New year revellers left tons of garbage in Metro Manila which drew the ire of environmental health activists.

The Philippines, according to Ecowaste Coalition, tagged January as “Zero Waste Month” but the first month of 2018 ominously began with tons of foul-smelling trash strewn all over the streets of Metro Manila, the product of the New Year’s eve celebration.

On Monday, members of the group went around cities of National Capital Region and took photos of mixed garbage comprised of food waste, beverage and food containers, paper and plastic packaging, remnants of firecrackers and fireworks and discards.

The piles of garbage were seen in the areas of Cubao and Balintawak in Quezon City; Sangandaan in Caloocan City, and MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela City; parts of Guadalupe in Makati City, and in Manila, particularly in the areas of Quiapo and along Juan Luna, C. Planas and Ilaya Streets and Recto Avenue, all in Divisoria, the Philippine capital city’s bargain district.

Francis Martinez, head of the Metro Manila Development Authority-Metro Parkway Clearing Group, said as of 12 p.m. Tuesday, at least eight truckloads of garbage were also collected in the areas of Balintawak, Quezon City; Baclaran in Pasay City and Rizal Park in Manila.
