High court mourns death of retired SC Justice Torres

The Supreme Court is mourning the passing of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Justo P. Torres Jr. on Tuesday (Dec. 26) at the age of 90.

“The SC en banc mourns the passing of its 138th Associate Justice, Hon. Justo P. Torres, who served on the Court from March 11, 1996 to November 1, 1997,” the SC Public Information Office said in its Twitter account.

The SC PIO announced that a memorial service for the late Justice Torres Jr. will be held today, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. inside the SC session hall in Manila.

Torres was appointed by former president Fidel Ramos and served the SC until his mandatory retirement age of 70 in 1997.

Before his appointment to the SC, Torres served as an associate justice of the Court of Appeals.

He also served as Philippine Judicial Academy Vice Chancellor following his retirement from the 15-member bench.
