NU Bullpups extend streak to 5; Jr Archers turn back Jr Warriors

MIGUEL Oczon and Rhayyan Amsali showed the way as the Nazareth School-National University Bullpups put away the Far Eastern University-Diliman Baby Tamaraws, 80-68, last Sunday at the Blue Eagle gym in Katipunan Ave., Quezon City.

Miguel Oczon tallied 21 points and was part of a big scoring run in the fourth period powering the Bullpups to their fifth straight triumph in the 80th University Athletic Association of the Philippines junior basketball tournament.

Oczon’s  triple in the last 7:51 came on top of a decisive scoring run that gave the Bullpups a 16-point, 69-53 edge when it was over.

Amsali banged in 15 points for the Bullpups, who joined the Ateneo Blue Eaglets in the lead.

Scoring  twice off Matthew Manalang’s pass, Amsali found his range  during a pivotal 12-0 blast at the start of the fourth, handing the Bullpups a 60-53 edge.

Michael Malonzo eked out 14 points, with his split charity in the last 9:27 touching off the Bullpups’ breakaway that gave NU a 58-53 edge.

LJ Gonzales knocked in 18 points for the Baby Tams, who now have a 2-3 win-loss record.

The La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, who also have a 2-3 card,  leaned on the heroics of Chris Calimag and Nat Consejo at endgame to turn back the University of the East Junior Warriors, 77-74.

Consejo made 23 points, with his drive off Shan Vesaga’s assist allowing the Junior Archers to overtake UE, 75-74, in the last 49 seconds.

Calimag drilled in 16 points, including two charities in the finals 13 seconds that gave DLSZ the three-point win.
