A panel in the House of Representatives has created a technical working group that will fine-tune a bill which seeks to include the National Building Code of the Philippines among the subjects of engineering courses.
The House committee on higher and technical education, chaired by Rep. Ann Hofer of Zamboanga Sibugay, at a congressional hearing last Monday, stressed the need for the inclusion of the specific subject in engineering courses as the NBCP is presently not among the prescribed subjects for Civil, Electrical, Sanitary, Mechanical and Architectural Engineering.
“That is why I filed this bill so that when engineering students finish their course, they already have a background on the NBCP,” deputy majority leader and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., the bill's author, 3rd District, Pampanga), author of House Bill 5908, said.
Gonzales also urged the Department of Public Works and Highways to modify or upgrade the existing NBCP.
HB 5908 mandates the Commission on Higher Education to include the NBCP as one of the subjects in the curriculum for Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Sanitary and Architectural Engineering courses starting school year 2018-2019. Maricel V. Cruz
