Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada has sent aid to families affected by Wednesday night’s fire in Sampaloc.

Estrada tasked the Manila Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure the fire victims’ immediate needs are provided, such as food and temporary shelter.

“We will ensure that they are in safe grounds. They are now housed temporarily in an evacuation center,” Estrada said, citing the initial report submitted by MDSW chief Nanet Tanyag.

Reports indicated the fire broke out at Ma. Cristina Street in Barangay 455, Sampaloc around 10:17 p.m. Wednesday, All Saints’ Day. It was put out 12:03 a.m. Thursday. Bill Casas

Tanyag said 25 families or 128 individuals were displaced by fire. She said aid workers were immediately dispatched to the site to assist in the rescue and relief operations.

“We will ensure that they are given food so until such time they can recover and start their lives again.  We will ensure that there are no diseases, that no one will get sick. We have to ensure that the children can go back to school on the next semester,” Tanyag assured.

Tanyag added plans to distribute free construction materials to the displaced residents are being finalized with the Office of the City Mayor; the materials, consisting of several pieces of lumber and iron sheets, will help fire victims rebuild or repair their damaged houses. Bill Casas
