The Philippine unit of Southeast Asia’s largest budget airline is seeking the suspension of travel tax and terminal fees in some provincial airports for five years to entice more Filipinos to travel abroad.

Philippines AirAsia President Capt. Dexter Commendador said he asked Senator Franklin Drilon to help the aviation industry to suspend the collection of travel tax amounting to P1,620 and airport terminal fee worth P500.

The travel tax is a levy imposed by the government on individuals who are leaving the country irrespective of the place where the air ticket is issued and the form or place of payment.

Half of the proceeds from travel tax collections will go the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, 40 percent to the Commission on Higher Education for tourism-related educational programs and courses, and 10 percent to National Commission for Culture and Arts.
