A party-list lawmaker has pushed for more government support and funding for the housing sector amid proposals for the creation of a Department of Housing.
“While we commend the good intentions of the authors of the proposed creation of a Department of Housing, we believe that this will only slow down instead of spurring the development of the housing sector,” Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza said.
Atienza pointed out that what the housing sector needs to address the housing problem of the country is for government to give it the funding and support it sorely needs.
“The problem now is lack of real, genuine support and appropriations for the housing sector. All bureaus have been set up. Production of housing units for the poor is taken care of by the National Housing Authority. The National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation and the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board are set up to handle monitoring and supervision,” Atienza said.
