After breaking into the small screen as a commercial model, Matthias Rhoads, the Fil-Am hottie who created a buzz after starring as the groom in the viral fast food commercial, is now set to conquer greater heights alongside Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera in the new fantasy series, Super Ma’am.
Moonlighting as a model in the Philippines, the 24-year-old worked for multitude jobs before entering the world of show business. He posed for numerous advertisements and was one of Cosmo Magazine’s 69 Bachelors in 2016. He also revealed that he worked as a graphic artist in New York City before trying his luck in the country.
Armed with the dream of having his own company and becoming the next Anthony Bourdain, Rhoads initially tried pursuing a profession in the finance industry for three years until a few great opportunities landed on his doorstep.
It was also in the same city where he was discovered by agencies after stealing attention as Lapu-Lapu in the Philippine Independence Day Parade back in 2016.
Like other celebrity halfies, the Kapuso actor grew up abroad but it didn’t stop him in taking interest about Filipino culture. In an interview, the Filipino American mutt shared that his mom grew up in Quezon City and later migrated to Chicago to study. His father is from the Washington DC area while his maternal grandfather is a doctor from Batanes and his maternal grandmother, is from Guinobatan, Albay. He became involved in New Orleans Asian Pacific American Society (APAS) where he learned traditional Filipino dances such as La Simpatica and where he started modeling Filipino couture designs. It is also in APAS where he broadened his network that eventually introduced him to his current agency.
The former aspiring model from New York already had several projects in GMA Network but Super Ma’am is his first major take in his acting career. After signing a contract with GMA Artist Center back in April, Rhoads started appearing in various Kapuso shows including the top-rating Meant to Be, where he was introduced as part of the group that challenged the JEYA boys, the weekly anthology Karelasyon, Tonight with Arnold Clavio, Taste Buddies, and the female-oriented talk show, Mars. He also took part in Fiercest of Them All, GMA News TV’s reality modeling show where he joined as a coach and a judge.
In Super Ma’am, Rhoads introduced his character as a researcher, “I came to the Philippines to research the mystery behind the jars with an inscription of a Tamawo which is a mythical] creature.”
Speaking to GMANetwork.com, he also revealed that the show is centered on Pinoy urban legends.
“There are mysterious happenings to the students at a school, and one of the teachers takes it on themselves to fix the bad happenings. This is where my character will cross path with Marian Rivera’s character. There’s something about her that’s so mysterious that I want to find out. You know, her connection with what I’m researching.”
Super Ma’am is set to spice up September nights with its comic fantasy and heart-warming episodes. Completing the members of the cast are actresses Helen Gamboa, and Meg Imperial and Rhoads Kwentong Jollibee co-actors Ash Ortega and Enrico Cuenca.
