PH joyful after first gold in KL

MALACAÑANG on Saturday expressed joy after runner Mary Joy Tabal delivered the first gold for the Philippines at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

“We congratulate Mary Joy Tabal for giving the Philippines its first gold medal with her performance in the women’s marathon at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

DAGHANG SALAMAT. Joy is on the face of Cebuana Mary Joy Tabal who earns Saturday the Philippines’ first gold medal of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games with a dominant performance in the women’s marathon at the Palace of Justice here. Tabal, a Rio Olympian, was well ahead of her pursuers, Vietnam’s Hoang Thi Thanh (2:55.43) and Thailand’s Natthaya T (2:58.17) with her 2:48.26. PSC

“Congratulations to our athletes and good luck to the rest of the Philippine team.  The whole nation is solidly behind you. Mabuhay po kayo!”

PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez likewise expressed his elation over Tabal’s win. 

“First gold, wow! I informed the President through Secretary Bong Go about the news,” Ramirez said. 

He said he hoped this first win could break the gates of victories to come pouring in and improve the country’s medal standing.

“It should inspire our athletes there to give their best [for country]” he said.
