The House Committee on Transportation is holding a hearing meant to set rules and regulations that will govern Uber and Grab.

These two application-based taxi firms are classified under the so-called Transport Network Vehicle Sevices (TNVS).

Committee Chairman and Catanduanes Representative Cesar Sarmiento hailed the advantages of riding Uber and Grab, as well as other TNVS.

These include the ease and speed in booking rides, reliability of service, transparency in the identity of driver, plate number and fare, driver courtesy, convenience given the technology being used and smell of a new car.

Sarmiento notes, although commuters are greatly served by these units, this situation has not helped solve the perennial traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

It was learned during the hearing that over 100,000 car owners are accredited by Uber and Grab.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra is surprised to learn about this figure.

Senate is set to hold a similar inquiry.
