Older folks could sometimes feel like talking to an alien whenever they talk to teenagers. Not because today’s youth is speaking a new language; they’re still using English, only sometimes with a different meaning.

Clap back
Definition: (verb) To return a disrespectful talk or to insult someone after they insulted you; (noun) A snappy comeback
How to use: “Clap back fast if someone disses you” / “He never thought you’re capable of such a savage clap back”
Fire
Definition: (adj.) Used to describe something or someone that is hot; something that is trendy
How to use: “Last night’s concert was straight fire!” / “Beyonce is fire”
Grind
Definition: (verb) To work hard; to always hustle
How to use: “Midterms coming up, I need to be on the grind” / “Sorry I wasn’t able to come to your party, I was on the grind”
Gucci
Definition: (adj.) Something that is cool or good
How to use: “Your millennial pink hair is so Gucci” / “Distressed jeans are not gross, they’re Gucci”
Hundo P
Definition: (adv.) Short for 100 percent; used to describe something that is really awesome or something the speaker believes is totally certain
How to use: “Game of Thrones is hundo P the baddest TV show today” / “I’m going to pass the exam, hundo P”
Ship
Definition: (noun) Short for “relationship”; A fictional couple; The word is said to have originated in the world of fandoms
How to use: “Gendry-Arya is still my ship. I hope they end up together”
Sus
Definition: (adj.) Short for “suspect” or “suspicious”; Used to describe something or someone shady or suspicious
How to use: “His business offer with high return is sus” / “Don’t believe her excuse, it’s sus af”
Thirsty
Definition: (adj.) Too eager or desperate
How to use: “Let’s have some fun tonight, I’m so thirsty” / “He’s so hot, he’s making me thirsty af”
Turnt
Definition: (adj.) A variation of “turned,” it’s used to describe someone who is excessively excited; Usually used as “turnt up”
How to use: “I’m so turnt up, let’s ride the rollercoaster!” / “I’m so turnt to watch the next episode of Game of Thrones!”
YAAASS
Definition: (interjection) A variation of “yes”; Used as an expression of approval, agreement, and excitement
How to use: “Movie tonight?” “YAAASS!”
