Mayor: More flights to boost Dumaguete economy

DUMAGUETE—Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is optimistic that additional flights to and from this capital city of Negros Oriental will further boost the local economy.

On Wednesday, Remollo said executives of Cebu Pacific informed him there will be night flights to and from Dumaguete starting Friday.

The additional flight will leave Dumaguete at 8 p.m. to cater to businessmen and investors who have to return to Manila on the same day.

The mayor said the additional flight will entice tourists, investors, and businessmen alike to come to Dumaguete for conventions or a one-day visit, and then fly back to Manila in the evening.

Remollo has observed that a lot of tourists have to travel via Cebu and Bacolod before reaching Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City, dubbed as one of the best retirement places in the world.

The mayor also announced that starting July 26, four additional flights a week between Dumaguete and Davao will be availed of by passengers, and soon the Clark to Dumaguete route for passengers and visitors from Central and Northern Luzon.

Earlier this year, Remollo introduced a sports tourism program. The additional flights to and from Dumaguete will support the city’s quest to become the next regional hub by hosting the next Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games eliminations, he added.

With the additional flights, sports enthusiasts, delegates, officials, and athletes have several options to come here by boat or by plane, even if regional and national conferences and conventions are also happening in the city every now and then, Remollo said.
