The fight against terrorism

The government’s battle against the Maute terror group in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur has been going on for more than three weeks. Fifty-eight soldiers, more than 190 terrorists, and several civilians were killed during this period. There are severe damages to public and private properties.

Several countries expressed support to the Philippine government on its anti-terrorism operations against IS militants. China, through a statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang, expressed its support to the leadership of President Duterte and the government’s fight against terrorists.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim confirmed that the United States of America sent special forces to support the Armed Forces of the Philippines in its ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Marawi City. These US Armed Forces were seen flying drones over Marawi City as they assisted in the surveillance and intelligence gathering. These drones helped in identifying the location of the terrorists. Their P3 Orion surveillance aircraft was also spotted flying over the city.

It was not clear who exactly from the Philippine government sought support from the United States, but US Ambassador Kim clarified that US special operations forces, through the years, have been providing assistance in response to Philippine government’s requests. He specified that the US assistance is limited to technical assistance and that there were “no boots on the ground.” US State Secretary Rex Tillerson stated that day-to-day technical advice was part of the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. While President Duterte admitted not seeking America’s help, he still thanked them for their assistance.

I welcome the American support in the fight against terrorism. This is for our country’s benefit. The support and capabilities, particularly in the use of the drones by the US special operations forces, help in pinpointing the location of the terrorists and will prevent unnecessary damage to property and loss of lives.

An allied relationship between the Philippines and United States in the fight against terrorism is crucial. As long as the protocols established in the VFA and Edca are maintained and observed, we appreciate their assistance in the ongoing battle against the Maute group.
