How can someone like Sarah Geronimo manage her hectic schedule? She is currently one of the coaches in the weekly reality talent search The Voice of the Philippines Teen Edition, and she’s still has numerous engagements outside the studio including a nationwide tour of The Great Unknown Unplugged, a concert series that promotes her latest record.
The millennial pop queen will star in not just one but two big screen projects this year. The first will hit the theaters in July and the other one is currently in the works scheduled to be released in November.
The first movie is a romantic comedy with John Lloyd Cruz. It is co-produced by Viva Films and Star Cinema and is entitled Dear Future Husband. Not to be mistaken with the Meghan Trainor pop hit, the film marks the reunion of Sarah and John Lloyd after their three successful movies together namely: A Very Special Love (2008), You Changed My Life (2009) and It Takes a Man and a Woman (2013).
The principal photography for the film started late February with the pair reprising their roles as Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro.
Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board, A Very Special Love was a landmark film for both Sarah and Lloydie. By the end of its six-week commercial run, the romcom became the top grossing film of 2008 raking in almost P180 million at the tills. John Lloyd earned his second Box Office King from Guillermo Mendoza Scholarship Foundation while Sarah G got her first Box Office Queen recognition for the blockbuster movie.
A year later, a sequel to the romcom hit the theaters during the love month. The reception was massive as the movie breached the P200-million mark in terms of ticket sales. It ran for seven weeks and had a commercial run overseas. Entitled You Changed My Life, the romantic flick made the tandem of Sarah and Lloydie the Box Office Royalties of 2009 yet again.
Then, due to insistent public demand, Sarah and Loydie reunited in the third installment of A Very Special film series in 2013 in a film called It Takes a Man and a Woman. Like its predecessors, the romcom made a killing at the box office. It grossed P405 million after seven weeks in domestic theaters. It was also the highest grossing local film and second highest overall in the list of the biggest films released in the Philippines in 2013. During the FAMAS Award in 2014, the film received three nominations including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Editing.
On the other hand, Sarah G’s second big film for the year is the Filipino adaptation of Miss Granny, a 2014 South Korean comedy-drama directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk and top billed by Na Moon-hee and Shim Eun-kyung.
Miss Granny already had a Chinese version in 2015, it was followed by a Vietnamese remake in the same year. The Japanese and Thai versions hit the theaters in 2016 while an Indonesian adaptation was announced in April this year.
The comedy drama follows the story of a woman in her 70s who magically finds herself in the body of her 20-year-old self after having her picture taken at a mysterious photo studio.
With these two film projects, the pop queen proves once again that she's still one of the more bankable stars of her generation.
