Semirara Mining and Power Corp. said it received an approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission to run a 300-megawatt circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power project in Batangas province.

Semirara said in a disclosure to the stock exchange the Energy Regulatory Commission issued a certificate of compliance to unit Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp. for the 300-MW project in Barangay San Rafael, Calaca, Batangas.

Southwest Luzon was authorized by ERC to operate the plant at a rated capacity of 150 MW per unit.

“The COC is valid until May 11, 2021. SLPGC shall accordingly be filing an amendment of its registration on the rated capacity from 140 MW to 150 MW with the Philippine Electricity Market Corp./Wholesale Electricity Sport Market,” Semirara said.

PEMC operates WESM, the country’s trading floor of electricity.

Units 3 and 4 of Southwest Luzon power plant started commercial operations in August 2016 at 140 MW per unit pursuant to a provisional authority to operate issued by the ERC.

Units 3 and 4 are part of the expansion program of the 600-MW Calaca coal-fired power plant.

DMCI Holdings Inc., the holding firm of the Consunji Group, bought the 600-MW Calaca plant from the government in July 2009 with a bid of $361.7 million.

Semirara chairman Isidro Consunji earlier said the project had received an environmental compliance certificate and was waiting approval for a power supply agreement and right of way transmission line.

Semirara and  Meralco PowerGen Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manila Electric Co., formed a joint venture to build the power plant.
