A former chief of Land Transportation Office asked the Transportation Department to remove stenciling of chassis and engine numbers in the list of procedures when registering motor vehicles.

Alberto Suansing, a former LTO  chief and now a consultant at Toll Regulatory Board, told reporters that stenciling could be replaced by vehicle information number, which is stamped on metal plate located on left side of dash panel and visible from outside of the windshield.

He said other countries were using VIN to establish the identification of  motor vehicle.  “It [stencil] will cost you a lot of money. It has to be eliminated in the system to reduce inconvenience and corruption,” Suansing said.

Car owners are currently required  to undergo stenciling of motor engine as a requirement  for motor vehicle registration.  Suansing said the Philippines was the only country that still requires car stenciling.
