Vegetable garden opens in Quezon City

The Agriculture Department opened a community vegetable garden in Barangay Bahay Toro in Quezon City to officially launch the Urban Agriculture-Pagkain Para sa Masa program.

Agriculture officials joined Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte in opening the Bahay Toro communal vegetable garden beside the barangay’s covered court.

Agriculture Undersecretary Ranibai Dilangalen said urban residents should start growing their own food to ensure they eat safe and fresh produce and save money.

The agency also offers assistance to communities engaging in mushroom culture, hydroponics and aquaponics.

“Urban gardening is easy. It also doesn’t require a big land area to start with,” Dilangalen said.

Belmonte cited 166 urban farmers in her jurisdiction and Quezon City plans to expand the number of urban gardens.
