Artists paint ‘love’ for Boracay on local school walls

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan—Some 14 artists, composed mostly of locals, turned the blank walls of an elementary school in this resort island into a colorful attraction.

The painting and beautification activity, which started Friday at Balabag Elementary School, is part of the five-day “Paint My Love for the Island” project in line with the 20th year anniversary of the group Boracay Foundation, Inc.

The activity, supported by the paint company Rain or Shine, aims to create murals depicting the Filipino culture and the beauty of Boracay.

Aquila Macavinta, coordinator of the project, said they aimed to spread Filipino culture and the beauty of Boracay through arts, among locals and tourists.

Macavinta said they likewise wanted to promote environmental awareness through their artwork.

While some of the works are not yet done, the school’s outer wall has already become an attraction, with tourists taking pictures of the artwork.

Justin Avellana, Rain or Shine marketing representative for Aklan, said supporting the project was their company’s way of helping the island’s tourism industry.

He said that through art, “even a school wall could be utilized as a tourist attraction.” Avellana also assured that their products were environment- and child-friendly.

He said the artists used water-based paints that have less volatile organic compounds, making it safe for health and the environment.
