Ginebra, SMB return to action

THE league’s top two teams plunge back to action in their bid to separate themselves from the pack as the 2017 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup resumes following a one week break.

Co-leaders San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra face separate foes as they try to remain at the top.

After tasting their first defeat in their last game, the Beermen (5-1) are looking to bounce back. They are heavily favored against still winless NLEX (0-8) in their 4:15 p.m. tussle at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Right after, the Gin Kings (5-1), currently the league’s hottest team, shoot for their sixth straight win when they get tested by inconsistent Rain or Shine (4-4) at 7 p.m. in an explosive main event.

San Miguel Beer, carrying its momentum from its Philippine Cup title win, started out like a house on fire and won its first five games.

However, it stumbled the last time out, bowing to TNT KaTropa, 112-105, two weeks ago.

Now, the Beermen are looking to vent their ire on the dismal Road Warriors, who have not won a game with only three assignments left.

Barangay Ginebra import Justin Brownlee drives strong to the hoop against a pair of TNT defenders. Brownlee will try to lead Ginebra to a sixth consecutive when they battle Rain or Shine at 7 p.m. in an explosive main event.

NLEX though will head the game with a retooled line-up as it will now be reinforced by savvy veterans Larry Fonacier and JR Quinahan. Former gunners Garvo Lanete, Sean Anthony and Bradwyn Guinto are now gone following a comprehensive trade two weeks ago.

After losing its conference opener, Ginebra, behind its steady and prolific import Justin Brownlee, is playing really well.

Its last victim was Alaska with Ginebra escaping with a 103-102 win.

On the other hand, the Elasto Painters just can’t seem to find consistency as they split their eight games thus far.

Victories for San Miguel and Ginebra will put them a step closer to securing a berth in the quarterfinals and will also put them at a better position to finish in the top two.
