DAVAO CITY — Flyweights Jake Bornea and Ryan Lumacad disposed of their separate opponents to emerge the biggest winners in the Davao Boxing Showdown which served as the highlight of the 3rd Philippine Boxing Convention in this city.

Bornea, a native of nearby General Santos City, threw a barrage of head and body combinations that proved too much for his foe Renerio Arizala of Mandaluyong City, forcing international referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight in the eighth round.

Weeks, a marquee referee who officiated Manny Pacquio’s fights against Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar dela Hoya and the final trilogy with Juan Manuel Marquez, declared Bornea the winner by technical knockout and the new World Boxing Federation Super flyweight champion.

Lumacad, fighting out of Highland Boxing Gym, used his superior speed and accurate boxing to pound out a unanimous decision win against Cebu City’s Renoel Panel and bag the vacant Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Super flyweight Championship at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.

WBF and ABF president Naris Singwangcha of Thailand was on hand to award the belts to Bornea and Lumacad. They were joined in the ring by Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Baham Mitra and commissioners Edward Trinidad and Fritz Gaston.

Bornea had seen his best chances to finish off Arizala in the 8th round as he unleashed powerful stab to the body. Arizala was visibly hurt the body punches and lowered his guard. Bornea turned to his head and Weeks had seen enough punishment and stopped the bout.

Weeks was the guest speaker the day before in the seminar participated by Filipino referees and judges in the convention held by GAB at the Marco Polo Hotel.

He just declared the sixth career knockout of the 21-year-old Bornea who improved his pro record to 12 victories in 14 fights. Arizala tasted his 7th loss in 21 fights, including a draw.
