Alvarez hails SWS survey on death penalty

SPEAKER Pantaleon Alvarez on Monday hailed the recent Social Weather Station survey showing that majority of Filipinos were for death penalty.

“The survey result is an affirmation that the House made the right move in passing the death penalty bill,” Alvarez said.

Last week, the SWS released the result of its March 25-28 survey showing that 61 percent, or three in five Filipinos, are for the revival of death penalty, one of the priorities of the Duterte administration.

Alvarez echoed Malacañang’s statement the survey result was an affirmation of President Rodrigo Duterte’s leadership and approval of his war on drugs.

There were 1,200 respondents in the SWS survey and only 23 percent of them opposed the reimposition of capital punishment.

Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone shared Alvarez’s view.

“It’s a vindication of the House decision on the reimposition of death penalty,” Evardone said.

Evardone said he believed the majority of the Filipino people would continue supporting the revival of death penalty

The proposed “Death Penalty Law” defines heinous crimes as “grievous, odious and hateful offenses, which by reason of their inherent or manifest wickedness, viciousness, atrocity and perversity are repugnant and outrageous to the common standards and norms of decency and morality in a just, civilized and orderly society.”
