CEBU City’s Marc Nicole Suson and Siquijor ‘s Ellaine Rose Bahonsua continued their domination of the older age groups at the recent Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Championship Series held in Ubay, Bohol, the 10th leg in the Visayas-Mindanao region and the 15th overall for this year’s series, now on its 11th year.
Suson took both the 16-under and 18-under titles, beating separate opponents. He disposed of Dipolog bet Stephen Zion Guia, 6-0, 6-3, in the 16-under finals and was equally impressive in bumping off Cagayan de Oro’s Menchiro Suzuki, 6-2, 6-2, in their championship meeting for the 18-under crown.
Bahonsua beat local bet Mariam Yazmin Garci for the same titles in the girls’ division. She swept Garci, 6-3, 7-5, in the finals of the 16- under and had an easier time in the 18-under finals, 6-3, 6-2, in the championship match of the tournament also backed by Dunlop as the official ball.
“I foresee a bright future ahead of these two young players, they have been consistent in their performance in the series these past recent years. It is just a matter of time before they start competing regularly at the national level,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, President/CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier.
Up-and-coming Aaron Jacque Geromo from Zamboanga del Norte edged out local player Mykk Lungay, 6-4, 6-3, for the boys’ 14-under crown; Jacob Diago from Bais City beat another local player Lander Joseph Butcon, 6-2, 6-2, to take the boys’ 12-under title; while Kenneth Jumamoy salvaged local pride in the 10-under as he defeated James Cyril Romada from Bais, 4-0, 4-1, in the finals.
In the girls’ side, another Bais City bet made waves as Dianafe Perez emerged champion in the 14-under, beating Bohol’s Shanevy Pelino, 6-1, 6-0, for the crown, while Karyl Salas was the lone local bet in the distaff side to win, taking home the 12-under title with a close 6-4, 7-6 victory over Jade-Ann Catulong from Bais.
There were only three doubles’ events contested with the duo of Scottie Jumamoy and Wilfredo Gorospe posting an 8-4 win over Suson and Tyrone Lariego in the boys’ 18-under group; Harland Hogan and Geromo squeaking past Lungay and Jericho Ofico, 8-7, in the finals of the boys’ 14 & under finals; and Capulong and James Zyril Romada teaming up to win the 10-under doubles title over the tandem of John Kenneth Jumamoy and Krist Aaron Anud.
