The Department of Health (DOH) has alloted P 100-million worth of funds for mental health this year.

Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial says, government also has a budget of one billion pesos for the upgrading of public institutions that deal with mental illness.

These statements come in view of the report of the World Health Organization that showed an 18 percent increase in the number of persons suffering from depression around the globe.

This is over a span of one decade or from 2005 to 2015.

Many of the cases end up in suicides.

The report indicates about 332 million people worldwide are experiencing depression.

Health Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag says, bullying and bashing in social media have aggravated this problem.

In the Philippines, people who are going through depression may call DOH helpline 5584673 for guidance and counselling.
