Interior and Local Government Secretary will discuss with House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez plans to enact a law that will allow President Rodrigo Duterte to appoint barangay captains.
Sueno says, he has talked with Senate President Koko Pimentel on the legislative process that needs to be accomplished for this purpose.
“Kagabi, nagkausap kami ni Senate President Koko Pimentel kung ano ang gagawin (last night, I talked with Senate President Koko Pimentel on what should be done),” Sueno said.
The senate leader told Sueno that he would discuss the matter with his fellow senators.
Sueno is now setting an appointment with House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
He reports, the Speaker is already moving to get the support of the members of the House of Representatives for such a measure.
The meetings of Sueno with leaders of Congress are in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s desire to simply appoint barangay captains, instead of holding barangay elections.
Barangay elections are set on October 23 this year.
Duterte had said, he wants to prevent the election of personalities who are involved in illegal drugs in their communities.
He noted that even now, many barangay captains are behind the proliferation of drug trade in their areas.
