Graduates from University of the Philippines scored highest this year in the annual employers’ assessment of who among the fresh graduates were the top performers once they enter the field, accrding to the latest Fresh Graduates Report of JobStreet Philippines showed.

From third place last year, UP reclaimed the top spot from previous year’s leader, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, which slid to second spot. The Santa Mesa-based campus, however, meanwhile, remained as the main source of fresh graduates for employers.

Ateneo de Manila University ranked third among schools which employers think were the best fresh hires, followed by University of Santo Tomas (4th), De La Salle University (5th), Technological Institute of the Philippines (6th), Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (7th), Far Eastern University (8th), Mapua Institute of Technology (9th) and Adamson University (10th).

PUP, UP and UST are the main sources of new hires for employers at 56 percent, 46 percent and 44 percent, respectively, followed by DLSU, ADMU, Far Eastern University, Technological Insitute of the Philippines, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, University of the East, and Adamson University.

PUP graduates are the main draw for industries with most jobs (BPO, Retail, Real Estate and Manufacturing) while UP is the school of choice for technical and corporate employees (Food/Beverage, Tourism, IT, and Education). TIP, meanwhile, leads the list for Materials and Construction industries.

The study also revealed that attitude remains the number one factor that employers look for in a fresh graduate before they decide whether to hire him or her, followed by an applicant’s field of study, and asking salary.

“More than any time in recent history, the changes in attitude and preferences in employment have become rapid and constant,” Philip Gioca, country manager of JobStreet.com Philippines, said.

“Job seekers should equip themselves with further knowledge should they want a distinct advantage in this highly competitive field,” he added.

In 2015, the top factors in hiring fresh grads were internship experience, extra-curricular skills and part-time jobs.

After a fresh graduate is hired, employers said they are impressed the most by willingness to learn, followed by personal grooming and effectiveness as team players, the study said.

According to the same survey, law/legal services, healthcare and journalism topped the list of the 10 highest-paying jobs for fresh graduates, with average monthly salary.

Fresh hires of Law/legal services would receive an average monthly salary of P27,124, followed by healthcare (P23,216), Journalism (P21,777) and IT-related (P21,703).
