The 89th Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theater in LA was, to say the least, an unforgettable one. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars were present, expectedly; a major blunder occurred when the winner for Best Picture was mistakenly announced, unexpectedly.
Despite the glitch, one thing remained the same: the invitees made sure to bring their fashion A-game to the most prestigious night in the US film industry. Among the all the stars present here are 10 who shone and stood out from the pack and won the red carpet of Oscars 2017.
Taraji P. Henson
The Hidden Figures star channels the glorious old Hollywood style in custom Alberta Ferretti dress. The cut of the midnight blue velvet off-the-shoulder number is undoubtedly classic—sexy not tacky; and fits Taraji like a glove. Her choice of accessory matches her dress perfectly, going for a diamond Nirav Modi necklace. She finishes off her look with Jimmy Choo shoes and clutch.
Emma Stone
Not only did she win the Best Actress nod, she also won in the fashion category in this gilded gown from Ricardo Tisci’s final couture collection for Givenchy. Emma’s dress has the right amount of metallic, and the fringes on the skirt make for an ideal outfit you’d wear if you were dancing to jazz music or winning an Oscar. Accessories are kept to a minimum, as she opts for Tiffany & Co. diamond drop earrings.
Nicole Kidman
Fair-skinned Nicole dared to wear a nude Armani Prive high-neck column gown, which could easily make someone with the same skin tone as hers washed out. But the Lion actress proves why she’s a red carpet mainstay by pulling it off. She perfectly finishes the look with Stuart Weitzman shoes and bold red lipstick.
Mahershala Ali
The Moonlight star shows he’s not only good at acting—after winning Best Supporting Actor—but has great style too. Mahershala looks sharp in monochrome, going all black on his tuxedo jacket, shirt, pants and oxfords shoes. The houndstooth pocket square adds dimension to his Oscars outfit.
Naomie Harris
In the sea of long gowns, Naomie goes for a Raf Simmons for Calvin Klein white sequined dress in cocktail length. The cape adds drama and fun aspect to her outfit. Her sunflower yellow suede sandals with asymmetrical crystal straps meanwhile spiced up her sleek look for the evening.
Viola Davis
Oscars 2017’s Best Supporting Actress is definitely a standout in this elegant red Armani Prive gown. The color and simplicity of Viola’s look made a strong statement on the red carpet. Accessories are kept to a minimum, only opting for gold bracelet. We however think she could have gone for a gold clutch to achieve a more cohesive look.
Brie Larson
Brie looks every bit a major movie star in this velvet Oscar dela Renta dress, whose ruffled hem adds a feminine appeal to its timeless cut. Much like Taraji, who also gives velvet a gorgeous comeback on the red carpet, Brie looks sexy in this number—showing just the right amount of skin without bordering into tacky or corny. She opts out of wearing necklace to emphasize the gown’s neckline. Her entire look makes for a perfect canvass for her bold red lips.
Justin Timberlake
Before stealing the show with his upbeat performance of his song “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Justin first took the spotlight wearing a well-fitted tuxedo and black patent oxfords. Needless to say, he’s our suit and (bow) tie goals.
Auli’i Cravalho
The 16-year-old upcoming star from Hawaii enters the Hollywood with a bang. Her angelic voice in Moana, and this white with metallic details dress from Rubin Singer show us that this new face has a long and exciting Hollywood journey ahead of her.
Kristen Dunst
When they say you can never go wrong with black, Kristen took it to heart and walked away triumphant. The Dior Haute Coutur silk faille strapless corseted gown with round neckline and asymmetric skirt gives off a princess feel. Kristen’s hair, makeup and choice of jewelry are definitely on point.
