The Memorandum of Agreement for the construction of P 2.8-billion worth of common train station for Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Quezon City has been signed.
The station that will be built between SM North Edsa and Trinoma malls will link MRT 3 and LRT 1 (LRT) 1, as well as MRT 7 that has yet to be constructed.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) led the signing on Wednesday morning.
Present in the event were officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways, SM Prime Holdings Incorporated, Universal LRT Corporation Limited of San Miguel Corporation, Light Rail Manila Corporation, North Triangle Depot Commercial Corporation and Light Rail Transit Authority.
The construction of the common station has been postponed for eight years.
The project was supposed to begin in 2009 near SM North Edsa but it was mired in legal controversies.
The Deparment of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) was about to resume the building of the complex in 2014, but the Supreme Court stopped it, after SM Prime Holdings questioned the new location near Trinoma Mall.
DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade broke the deadlock by convincing the two mall owners to sign an accord that will pave the way for the construction of the common station in between their commercial establishments.
The common station is expected to open in two years.
