China comforts PH after ‘Nina’ onslaught

BEIJING”•Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday extended his condolences to President Rodrigo Duterte over the death and destruction caused by Typhoon “Nock-ten” in the Philippines.

Xi said the Chinese government and people were worried about the Filipinos who lost their homes in the disaster, and that China was ready to provide emergency assistance.

“Nock-ten,” which battered the northern part of the Philippines on Christmas Day, left six people dead and 19 others missing and caused $80 million in damage. 

In Manila, disaster officials said the damage wreaked by Typhoon “Nock-ten” or “Nina” in Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Region V had so far reached P5.14 billion.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said the damage to agriculture reached P4.12 billion and to infrastructure P1.02 billion.

Typhoon “Nina” displaced 424,223 families or 1,893,404 individuals in 1,698 villages.
